Mapping Explanation-based Learning onto Soar: the Sequel

چکیده

In past work, chunking in Soar has been analyzed as a variant of explanation-based learning. The components and processes underlying EBL have been mapped to their corresponding components and processes in chunking. The cost and generality of the resulting rules have also been compared. Here we extend that work by analyzing an implementation of EBL within Soar as a sequence of transformations from a problem solving episode to a learned rule. The transformations in this sequence, along with their intermediate products, are then evaluated for their eeects on the generality and expensiveness of the rules learned, and compared with the results of a similar analysis previously performed for chunking. The analysis reveals that EBL, as implemented for Soar, yields the same sources of expensiveness and overgenerality as does chunking | and that, in fact, these problems stem more from other aspects of Soar than from the details of either learning algorithm. (However, some of these aspects may appear in other AI architectures, even though the analysis is based on Soar.) Moreover this analysis reveals that the diierences between EBL and chunking are localized within a single transformation, where chunking overspecializes with respect to EBL.

1986 - Mapping Explanation-Based Generalization onto Soar

Explanation-based generalization (EBG) is a powerful approach to concept formation in which a justifiable concept definition is acquired from a single training example and an underlying theory of how the example is an instance of the concept. Soar is an attempt to build a general cognitive architecture combining general learning, problem solving, and memory capabilities. It includes an independ...

An Application of Explanation-Based Learning to Discourse Generation and Interpretation

This paper presents a brief description of Explanation-Based Learning (EBL), and argues that it is an approach to machine learning with signi cant potential for use in discourse processing. More speci cally, EBL can be used by systems that model discourse generation as goaldriven behavior, and that model discourse interpretation as recognizing the speaker's discourse goals. As evidence, we desc...

Knowledge Level and Inductive Uses of Chunking (EBL)

When explanation-based learning (EBL) is used for knowledge level learning (KLL), training examples are essential, and EBL is not simply reducible to partial evaluation. A key enabling factor in this behavior is the use of domain theories in which not every element is believed a priori. When used with such domain theories EBL provides a basis for rote learning (deductive KLL) and induction from...

A Transformational Analysis of the Ebl Utility Problem in Soar

EEciency is a major concern for all planning systems. One way of achieving eeciency is the application of learning techniques to speed up planning. Accordingly, there has been considerable amount of research on applying EBL (explanation-based learning) techniques to planning. However, EBL is known to suuer from the utility problem, where the cost of using the learned knowledge overwhelms its be...

Flexibly Instructable Agents

This paper presents an approach to learning from situated, interactive tutorial instruction within an ongoing agent. Tutorial instruction is a exible (and thus powerful) paradigm for teaching tasks because it allows an instructor to communicate whatever types of knowledge an agent might need in whatever situations might arise. To support this exibility, however, the agent must be able to learn ...
